Hypoglycemia activates GI-ERαvlVMH neurons through the opening of Ano4 channel, and inhibits GE-ERαvlVMH neurons through the opening of the Abcc8-containing KATP channel. Activated GI-ERαvlVMH neurons (via projections to the mpARH) and inhibited GE-ERαvlVMH neurons (via projections to the DRN) both contribute to the prevention of severe hypoglycemia.
