a Time-resolved Faraday rotation following the impulsive optical excitation at time t = 0. b Magnified view of the region around t = 0. c Offset-corrected oscillation (see Methods section). The red line is an exponentially damped sine-fit with the dashed line as its envelope. The extrapolation of the fit towards t = 0 is shown in b and reveals a finite deflection at t = 0. This initial deflection yields a temporal shift of the spin precession by ~280 fs, which amounts to an initial phase of 0.1 for a precession with a period of 18.2 ps.
