Each curve corresponds to a different number of layers L in the ansatz of Fig. 4 with L = 2,…, 20. Curves were averaged over 9 instances of the autoencoder. As the number of layers increases, the optimization becomes harder. Inset: Number of shots needed to reach cost values of \(C_{\rm{L}}^{\prime} =0.02\) and \(C_{\rm{L}}^{\prime} =0.05\) versus number of layers L. As L increases the number of shots needed to reach the indicated cost values appears to increase exponentially.
