The timeseries show abrupt-4xCO2 anomalies from the last 20 years of the pre-industrial spinup. The spinup period is shown in the time before year 0, to indicate the variability. Thinner lines show annual averages, while thicker lines show the 11-year running means (calculated separately for the periods before and after year 0 so as not to confound the transition). The region is defined in Supplementary Fig. 5. a Integrated salt fluxes in 105 psu m3/s. The advection timeseries includes the surface correction term from MITgcm’s linear free surface scheme. b Integrated surface freshwater fluxes in 103 m3/s. Note the opposite sign to (a). Sea ice freezing refers to the freshwater flux from sea ice freezing, which has the opposite sign to the freezing rate itself.
