  1. These simplified compositions were also used in ref. 15. The simplified peridotite composition based on refs. 75,76 is included to demonstrate its similarity to pyrolite used in Figs. 1–2. In our calculations we used a partitioning coefficient KD = [Fe/Mg]Bm / [Fe/Mg]Fp = [x/(1 − x − z)] / [y/(1 − y)] = 0.5.
