Fig. 4: Relationship between activity choices and final performance.
From: Humans monitor learning progress in curiosity-driven exploration

The scatter plot shows the difficulty-weighted final score (dwfPC; y-axis) as a function of the self-challenge index (SC; x-axis). Each point is one participant. Colors indicate the number of activities mastered: NAM1, N = 99 (NEG = 42; NIG = 57); NAM2, N = 126 (NEG = 58; NIG = 68); and NAM3, N = 140 (NEG = 88; NIG = 52); filled and unfilled circles indicate, respectively, EG (N = 188) and IG (N = 177) groups. The black curve shows the line of best fit from a linear-quadratic regression model, with 95% confidence intervals represented by the strip surrounded by black dashed lines. The marginal histograms on the top show the distributions of SC scores for each NAM (color) and group (solid and dashed traces). SC was higher for EG relative to IG groups in participants who mastered only 1 or 2 activities (NAM1 and NAM2), and was equivalent, with intermediate values, for participants who mastered all 3 activities (NAM3; top histogram).
