Mechanism of the red PL emission of the CDs. Protonation of surface 2,3-DAPN fluorophore strongly affects the molecular state of CDs, thus narrowing the transition band gaps and finally triggering one-photon and NIR excitation induced two-photon red fluorescence emission.
