Different stages of the transport cycle, ad, l cytoplasmic-open state, e, k occluded state, and fj matrix-open state. The substrates ADP and ATP have an adenine moiety (green and cyan, respectively), a ribose moiety (yellow) and two or three phosphate moieties, respectively (orange). The adenosine binding site is represented by a horseshoe shape, whereas positively charged and polar residues of the binding site are shown in blue and green, respectively. The black arrowheads show the substrate movements that induce the conversion between states, whereas the red ones indicate entry and exit of the substrates.
