Conceptual model for the precursory activity prior to the 2014 eruption at Mt Ontake (not to scale). We define 3 stages corresponding to Stage 1: sealing of the sub-surface/Stage 2: pressurization/Stage 3: Over-pressurization. The red triangle corresponds to seismic stations located on the summit, yellow stars to earthquakes, blue and red colors to extensive and compressive strains, respectively, and the blue rectangle on the eastern flank to the water level in the well at GOT.
