smFRET efficiency histogram of nicked DNA (blue) and nicked DNA in the presence of either F2 (magenta), F1F2 (green) or full-length PARP-1 (grey here, the same histogram as in Fig. 1), together with cartoons illustrating the underlying conformations. The indicated values correspond to the peak FRET efficiencies obtained by Gaussian fitting (Methods, Supplementary Fig. 2 and Supplementary Table 1).
