a Subduction initiation on the western edge of the Caribbean plateau. b Sinking of the Farallon slab below the plateau triggers upwelling of the mantle, back-arc opening and eastward drag of a segment of the Greater Antilles Arc, driven by subduction roll-back of the proto-Caribbean plate. c As the Farallon slab reaches the 660 km discontinuity, the plume is fully formed.
