Black points represent soils collected from geographically distributed sites across New Zealand and pink points represent soils collected from the geothermal gradient. For each regression (for \({T}_{{{{{{{\mathrm{opt}}}}}}}}\) and \({T}_{\inf }\)), lines indicate the best fit with the grey, shaded regions indicating the 95% confidence intervals. Regressions account for spatial relatedness (Methods) and \(x\) indicates mean environmental soil temperature in the equations.
