We show the Lagrangian biomass anomaly (LBA) measured in tonnes of carbon [Mg C] versus average dilution factor for ensembles of heterogeneous (red) and well-mixed (blue) patches for one month of integration. Each dot corresponds to a single simulation. For the well-mixed ensemble, the LBA decreases monotonically with dilution. In the heterogeneous ensemble the LBA presents a sharp and shallow minimum at low dilutions before a steady increase until reaching its maximum at intermediate dilutions. In the higher range of dilutions, the LBA of the heterogeneous ensemble is up to 600% larger than in the well-mixed one.
