Panels show the trajectories obtained by fitting Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) to the abundance (log-transformed and standardized) of four fish trophic categories with thermal affinities below (thermally sensitive species) or equal-above (thermally resistant species) the thermal threshold, against mean intensity of marine heatwaves (MHWs). Thermal thresholds are based on the maximum MHW intensity recorded at a site during the sampling period. Trends are plotted separately for marine protected areas (MPA, blue lines, and symbols) and open areas (OA, orange lines, and symbols); filled areas indicate standard errors; data are shown as z-scores. Panels include GAMM effective degrees of freedom, their significance (***p < 0.001; **p < 0.01; *p < 0.05) and the coefficients of determination (R2). Full statistical results are reported in Supplementary Table 4.
