Annual energy consumptions of baseline medium office buildings from four representative US climate zones defined by the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) standard were simulated in EnergyPlus based on key input assumptions from building energy efficiency standards36. The details are summarized in Supplementary Table 1. The results were verified using CBECS 2012 data34. Figure 1 shows the electricity breakdowns of each representative city. Note that the total electricity consumption, as well as the energy use breakdown percentage, vary by climate. It is necessary to conduct whole building energy simulation for each climate zone.
