Details of the chitosan samples are provided in Supplementary Table 1. Samples labeled series were collected during heterogeneous deacetylation: series 1 and 2A were not subject to further chemical treatment, whereas series 2B samples are series 2A after chemical depolymerization. The triad strength value was calculated from the RI signals according to Eq. (1), for averages of multiple replicates, the standard deviation is indicated. The number of measurements ranges from 1–3 per sample, the exact number of replicates for each sample is listed in the source data of this figure (see data availability).
