A Schematic representation of a growing microtubule. Curved GTP-tubulin heterodimers are incorporated at the microtubule plus (+) end, forming the GTP cap (indicated by orange β-tubulins). GTP-tubulin is gradually lost towards the minus (−) end due to GTP hydrolysis, causing the microtubule shaft to contain GDP-tubulin (indicated by gray β-tubulins).
