The model explicitly represents the antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum periods of an individual’s pregnancy as it progresses. Care seeking is driven either by the progression of a pregnancy, the transition between one pregnancy period and another (e.g. seeking healthcare once labour onsets) or following the onset of a complication. Complication-specific risk of maternal or perinatal death is applied following onset, allowing first for the delivery of treatment for those who seek care.
