In the experimental setup (a)43, the microwave transmission through the metasurface is recorded using a frequency tuneable source and a pair of lens horn antennas whilst a sequence of optical patterns generates photoexcited masks within the silicon layer. Reconstructed images of the change in transmission upon local photoexcitation δT are recorded over a range of frequencies, examples of which are shown in (b) and (c) at 12 GHz and 13 GHz respectively, for the metasurface shown in Fig. 1a. \(\bar{\lambda }\) denotes the wavelength at 15 GHz in free space.
