Illustration of the discretization of the magnetization m and the material parameter A for a one-dimensional representation of a two-phase magnetic system, using different numerical schemes: a Standard finite differences: Both the material parameter and the magnetization are discretized with a single value per simulation cell. The magnetization degrees of freedom are treated as sample points of a continuous function. b Finite elements: The material parameters are discretized using piecewise constant functions, while the magnetization is represented as piecewise affine, with degrees of freedom located at the vertices.
