It is folded by the instrumental response in units of EFE, where FE is the energy flux at energy E (that is, corrected for the effective area). The spectrum is binned according to the ‘optimal binning’ technique82, which is used for the spectral analysis throughout the Article. The non-X-ray background component is subtracted. Major fluorescence lines from cold matter are labelled. The error bars denote the 1σ confidence limits in photon statistics.
