A blend of six structurally related CSP components (in black dashed box) share a common biosynthetic pathway, in which the methyl ketones are formed by age- and sex-specific hydroxylation (in red text, the rate-limiting step possibly mediated by a cytochrome P450 system) of the 3,11-dimethyl alkane precursors and subsequent oxidation13.
