  1. Categories were defined based on sex, age, and mother-offspring status, the most important factors influencing dominance and bond strength within an elephant family group. Females were defined as adults if ≥10 years old, and males were defined as adults if independent from their natal group. All non-adults under this definition were classified as juveniles. Six years was chosen as the cutoff for different age classes because it is between 1-2x the average inter-birth interval, so a female ≥6 years older than another individual could have been that individual’s allomother.
