Simulation results (R package simr83) for the number of chains ranging from 9 to 54 to determine the exact power for the interaction effect ā€˜chain type–position’ (blue circles) and 90% CIs (error bars). The linear mixed-effect model ā€˜Story_prop ~ chain type × position + (1|chain)’ was fitted to the original data from Crompton et al.34 with three chain types and six positions. The estimated coefficients were reduced by one-third to make sample size estimation more conservative. The horizontal dashed black and red lines indicate 80% and 95% power, respectively.
