Gene expression for genes involved in the degradation of betaine (see Fig. 6a in the main text). Two pathways of betaine degradation were observed – betaine oxidation (panel a) or betaine reduction (panel b). Gene expression for each gene was summed for each field replicate (March n = 9; May n = 15; June n = 15; Sept n = 6) and was normalized by z-scoring gene expression across sampling time points. Abbreviations for genes are bmt – betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase, soxDBAG – sarcosine oxidase, glyA1 – serine dehydratase, sdaA - serine deaminase, grdA – betaine reductase, tmm – trimethylamine monooxygenase, qhpA – methylamine dehydrogenase.
