Variation in (a) MAG coverage (September n = 3, March n = 3, May n = 5, June 5 across all soil depths, See Supplemental Table 2) or (b) MAG total gene expression (Sept n = 2-3, March n = 3, May n = 5, June n = 4-5 across soil depths, See Supplemental Table 2) was assessed by non-metric dimensional scaling. The amount of variation (r2) that could be attributed to the month of soil collection, soil depth, and their interaction was assessed using permutational analysis of variance.
