a, Response times \({\tau }_{{\mathrm{a}}}\) (\({\tau}_{{\mathrm{o}}}\)) for two heliknotons reconnecting (separating) along the far-field helical axis χ0 (as shown in Fig. 5a, b) and b, two heliknotons reconnecting while approaching each other at 45 degrees with respect to χ0 (corresponding to Figs. 2d, f and 5c). Simulations were performed for a cell of thickness 25 μm and chiral LC pitch 5 μm.
