Serum sphingosine 1-phosphate as a marker of PD progression

Levels of sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) in serum are reduced in Parkinson disease (PD), according to a new study. Schwedhelm et al. used liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry to analyse levels of S1P in the serum of 196 individuals with PD and an equivalent number of controls. S1P levels were lower in individuals with PD than in controls. In individuals with PD, lower S1P levels were associated with lower motor function and faster motor decline, suggesting utility as a prognostic biomarker.
