Extended Data Table 6 Alternative calculation of current terrestrial BNF rates (kg N ha−1 yr−1) using the assumptions in ref. 3

From: Global terrestrial nitrogen fixation and its modification by agriculture

  1. This table presents alternative calculations to illustrate how assumed N fixer abundances in ref. 3 yield biased BNF rates. Central estimates are 2.5% trimmed means and lower and upper bounds in parentheses are 68% confidence intervals (analogous to ± 1 standard error). BNF by trees, shrubs, and herbs were adjusted to an assumed N fixer cover of 15%, the overall mid-range value used in ref. 3. The “n =” value in each cell indicates the number of BNF activity values upon which the rates in the cell are based. “*” indicates that data was absent or limited, and we substituted data from other biomes to account for niche spatial coverage; see details in Methods and Supplementary Methods. “ND” stands for “Not determined”. The biome abbreviations are as in Extended Data Table 1. IGBP land cover area in 2019 from ref. 51 - the land area of biomes weighted global mean BNF rates across natural biomes.
