Extended Data Table 5 Summaries of weighted Pearson’s correlations between observed mean annual leaf herbivory rate and time (years after the year 2000)

From: Stronger El Niños reduce tropical forest arthropod diversity and function

  1. Where possible, correlations were calculated separately for immature leaves (newly emerged leaves which were revisited, and proportion leaf area consumed in the interval recorded), mature leaves (also revisited), and leaves which were sampled opportunistically (visited only once, and proportion leaf area consumed prior recorded). Weighting was proportional to the number of plant species for which invertebrate leaf herbivory rate was assessed in any given year. Significance was assessed only for correlations derived from five or more data pairs and was derived from 10,000 randomizations of predicted arthropod diversity. In the tropical Americas, both mature leaves and leaves which were opportunistically sampled showed significantly decreasing leaf herbivory damage after the year 2000.
