  1. Weighting was proportional to the number of plant species for which invertebrate leaf herbivory rate was assessed in any given year. Significance was assessed only for correlations derived from five or more data pairs and was derived from 10,000 randomizations of predicted arthropod diversity. Predicted diversities of two arthropod orders to inflict chewing leaf herbivory damage on leaves, the Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, showed significant positive correlation with observed mean annual leaf herbivory rate.
