  1. Pore segmentation and quantitative analyses were performed using Avizo software. Due to many non-uniform illuminations in the original SEM images (see Fig. 4a), it is difficult to accurately segment micropores only using the Interactive Thresholding module (see Fig. 4b). Thus, we used a dynamic thresholding method to segment the micropores in SEM images of the four samples. The specific step-by-step segmentation instructions are as follows:
