Water-column distribution of the Lucky B plumes. Shown are ΔORP signals (30 s averages) recorded with the CTD unit, interpolated and projected on a north–south profile across the study area. Anomalies indicative of particle-rich venting were detected in the shallow plume at ~ 2,800–3,000 m water depth and a deep particle-poor plume was recorded at >3,000 m depth, with strongest signals towards the profile’s southern end; see text for discussion. We also intersected these shallow and deep plumes when lowering the OFOBS device to the seafloor and heaving it back up, respectively (cf. Fig. 2c). Also shown are positions of water samples taken with the CTD unit. Black dotted lines mark projected depth of CTD; pink thicker line at ~ 81°22.7ʹN indicates vertical profile presented in Fig. 2b.
