Teamwork and organizational culture are very important in the clinic, positively affecting patient safety and outcome. Similarly, translational sciences involving the use of animals demand a highly collaborative environment given the complexity of work necessary to perform high-quality animal research, while ensuring animal welfare.

In a new comment this month, Rebecca Ober, Jessie Ho and colleagues provide key recommendations to improve collaboration between clinicians, veterinary specialists and other scientists/lab staff. Using their own experience when relocating their lab to a new academic institution, the authors discuss how positive collaborative cultures can advance animal and human welfare, enhance research quality and provide mutual learning for all team members.
