Cultures under 40 μmol m−2 s−1 were performed using an LED plate, and cultures under other light intensities (4000, 7000, and 9000 μmol m−2 s−1) were performed using point source LED. All photos of cultures were taken at 72 h. No further growth was observed in the PCC6803 strain after 72 h under the 9000 μmol m−2 s−1 (Supplementary Fig. 1). The filled blue and red circles indicate average of OD730 measurements of PCC6803 and Tol strains, respectively. Error bars indicate standard deviation from triplicate experiments. The open symbols represent individual data points in the triplicate experiments.
