Since the large molecular size of fluorescent groups can diminish the biological activity of the parent small compound, the smallest possible molecular size is demanded. On the other hand, intracellular reacting probes have problems with nonspecific labeling and low labeling rates. X = no good, O = good and Triangle = moderate.
