a, Experimental design. Samples from patients with diarrhea were collected, classified as healthy-like or dysbiotic and used for a humanized mouse model of CDI13. Mice humanized with healthy-like microbiotas are recalcitrant to developing CDI and associated pathology, whereas mice colonized with communities from dysbiotic, symptomatic patients harbor persistent infections and higher levels of inflammation.
