Multiple cropping, or harvesting more than once a year, is key to agricultural intensification and diversification. Besides ensuring a more efficient use of land resources, certain crop combinations may improve nutrient cycling, reduce the need for agrochemicals and minimize risks. Yet, in specific situations, it can provide economic incentives that exacerbate cropland expansion, with negative environmental consequences. The understanding of the effects of multiple cropping systems and the situations in which they should be promoted is hindered by our poor understanding of their current distribution and extent.
