The projectile kinetic energy and distance of closest approach to target atoms determine whether the projectile, the targets, or both require explicit core electrons. The ZBL repulsive potential provides a constraint on the minimum distance of approach for a projectile with a given kinetic energy. The closest approach distance for different channeling and off-channeling trajectories is shown along the y-axis.
