Overall, the overlapping error bars indicate only small differences between hostile and neutral conditions on persuasiveness. Differences between rebuttal and rebuttal-absent conditions across experiments indicate a consistent benefit of using rebuttal. Point estimates represent mean post scores of intentions in Experiment 3 (a: n = 1200) and Experiment 4 (b: n = 1195) or mean post scores of attitudes in Experiment 3 (c: n = 1200) and Experiment 4 (d: n = 1195). Mean post scores are adjusted for baseline values. Error bars represent 95% confidence intervals. Shaded areas indicate the density of observations.
