Magnonics, the study and application of magnons—quanta of spin waves in magnetic systems—has emerged as a vibrant field of research over the past decade, driven by the need for more efficient data processing and storage technologies. As the world increasingly relies on digital devices, the limitations of conventional electronics become more pronounced, leading researchers to explore alternative paradigms including neuromorphic and wave-based computing or processing of quantum information. Magnonic devices offer the promise of ultra-low power consumption, faster processing speeds, and miniaturization capabilities that could transform how we approach classical and quantum information technology. The burgeoning interest in spin-based phenomena, coupled with advancements in development of new materials and characterization tools, makes this an opportune moment to consolidate recent findings and theoretical advancements in the field of magnonics. By launching this dedicated Collection, we aim to foster collaboration, inspire innovative research, and provide a platform for disseminating groundbreaking discoveries that bridge the gap between fundamental science and practical applications.

This Collection will encompass a wide array of topics within the realm of magnonics. It includes both conventional devices for magnon-based signal processing and hybrid systems that utilize the interaction between magnons and other excitations, such as phonons, photons, plasmons, and superconducting currents, within various materials and devices. We invite contributions that explore the fundamental physics of magnons, as well as experimental and theoretical studies that demonstrate their application in next-generation devices. Topics such as the integration of magnonic systems with existing electronic architectures, the development of new materials for enhanced magnonic properties and the exploration of quantum magnonic phenomena are particularly encouraged. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, this Collection aspires to highlight the transformative potential of magnonics in addressing current and future challenges in technology and information systems.

Editors

The Collection will publish original research papers, and articles in various formats (full details on content types can be found here). Papers will be published in npj Spintronics as soon as they are accepted and then collected together and promoted on the Collection homepage. All Guest Edited Collections are associated with a call for papers and are managed by one or more of our Editorial Board Members and the journal's Editors.

This Collection welcomes submissions from all authors – and not by invitation only – on the condition that the manuscripts fall within the scope of the Collection and of npj Spintronics more generally. All submissions are subject to the same peer review process and editorial standards as regular npj Spintronics articles, including the journal’s policy on competing interests. The Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer-review process. The peer review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
