This Special Issue provides a dedicated platform to consolidate and advance cutting-edge research that applies systems thinking, system dynamics, and related approaches to support sustainable mobility transitions in theory, method, and practice.

This special issue focuses on advancing sustainability and resilience in regional rail systems through integrated operational optimization, demand-responsive strategies, and intelligent network design. It addresses challenges arising from large-scale passenger demand, energy constraints, and system disruptions by combining theoretical models, algorithms, and real-world applications. The Collection aims to support the long-term, low-carbon, and disruption-resilient development of urban and region.

The issue seeks contributions from across disciplines—transportation engineering, urban analytics, operations research, behavioral science, and public policy—that examine how data-driven, real-time logistics operations can reduce environmental impact, improve accessibility, and align with multimodal mobility systems.

This collection welcomes contributions that examine the complex dynamics of urban transportation in the Global South. Submissions are encouraged that not only analyze these barriers but also propose policies and measures to overcome them—particularly in contexts where rapid urbanization, socioeconomic inequality, and limited resources make these challenges especially urgent.

This special issue focuses on understanding how the resilience of transportation systems changes in response to various extreme weather events and identifying strategies to strengthen the resilience of multimodal transportation systems in the face of climate change.

This collection invites papers on planning, operations, and management of transport infrastructure for alternative fuel vehicles, focusing on demand, energy impacts, and synergy with other emerging vehicle technologies.
