Da Pra, Boriati and colleagues show that physiological glucocorticoids suppress growth-factor-induced cardiomyocyte regeneration by inhibiting ERK signaling and propose glucocorticoid receptor antagonism as a strategy to enhance their protective and regenerative effects.

Redifferentiated cardiomyocytes retain residual dedifferentiation signatures and are protected against ischemic injury

Shakked et al. highlight the importance of cardiomyocytes’ redifferentiation after dedifferentiation and proliferation in cardiac repair and show that redifferentiation depends on negative feedback signaling and LATS1/2 Hippo pathway activity. Cardiomyocyte redifferentiation not only promotes the restoration of cardiac function but also protects against future insult.

ERBB2 triggers mammalian heart regeneration by promoting cardiomyocyte dedifferentiation and proliferation

Tzahor and colleagues show that ErbB2 signalling is required for cardiomyocyte proliferation in fetal and postnatal mouse hearts, and that its activation in adult hearts promotes cardiomyocyte proliferation and regeneration following myocardial ischaemic injury.
