A 3.05 Å cocrystal structure of BWC0977, a pyrazino-oxazinone-based novel bacterial topoisomerase inhibitor (NBTI) in Phase 1 clinical trials, with topoisomerase IV from Klebsiella pneumoniae reveals features that underpin BWC0977’s antibacterial potency.

Pathways to commercially viable organic photovoltaic materials

Low-cost, efficient and stable materials are required to enable the widespread application of organic photovoltaics. In this Review, the challenges associated with designing low-cost materials, developing eco-friendly solvents and understanding intrinsic degradation mechanisms of organic photovoltaics are discussed.

Intermolecular-force-driven anisotropy breaks the thermoelectric trade-off in n-type conjugated polymers

Electronic devices based on conjugated polymers require a preferential molecular orientation to maximize performance. Here a self-induced anisotropy strategy is demonstrated that harnesses intermolecular forces between solvents, dopants and the polymer to orient the film, enabling an enhanced thermoelectric power factor.

Hexanary blends: a strategy towards thermally stable organic photovoltaics

Non-fullerene-based organic solar cells generally suffer from poor thermal stability and especially in case of devices with thick active layers. Here, the authors report hexanary blends based on multi-component acceptor mixtures with a device efficiency of 17.6% and thermally stability for 23 days at 130 °C.

Intrinsic efficiency limits in low-bandgap non-fullerene acceptor organic solar cells

A systematic analysis of a series of donor–acceptor organic blends shows that in solar cells based on low-bandgap non-fullerene acceptors an ionization energy offset of about 0.5 eV is required to ensure efficient charge separation.
