Fear generalization allows learned threats to extend to similar stimuli, but the early sensory mechanisms involved are unclear. Here, authors show that fear conditioning reduces GABAB inhibition in the olfactory bulb scaled to odor similarity, and that bidirectional manipulation of this inhibition controls breadth of fear generalization.
