A molecular ruthenium catalyst with water-oxidation activity comparable to that of photosystem II

Increasing the efficiency and speed of the water-oxidation reaction is crucial to realizing light-driven water splitting. Now, a mononuclear ruthenium complex achieves fast water-oxidation catalysis with a high reaction rate of more than 300 turnovers per second, comparable to the activity of the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II.

TGF-β builds a dual immune barrier in colorectal cancer by impairing T cell recruitment and instructing immunosuppressive SPP1⁺ macrophages

Targeting TGFBR1 in transplantable mouse colorectal tumor organoids improves response to anti-PD-L1 therapy. Mechanistically, TGF-β abrogates clonal expansion of T effector and memory phenotypes and indirectly inhibits T cell activity by regulating immunosuppressive tumor-associated macrophage activity.

Inverse barocaloric effect in the giant magnetocaloric La–Fe–Si–Co compound

When materials change temperature as a result of the application of pressure or a change in the magnetization, they are said to display a barocaloric or magnetocaloric effect, respectively. This study reports a substantial barocaloric effect in the giant magnetocaloric material LaFe_11.33Co_0.47Si_1.2.

A multicaloric cooling cycle that exploits thermal hysteresis

Magnetocaloric effects can be used for refrigeration, but application uptake is limited due to large amounts of magnetic material used. Here, a cooling cycle is shown that uses thermal hysteresis, significantly reducing magnetic material quantity.

Mitochondria-derived nuclear ATP surge protects against confinement-induced proliferation defects

The authors uncover a mechano-metabolic adaptation where confinement induces rapid mitochondrial relocalization to the nuclear periphery, generating localized nuclear ATP surges that support chromatin remodeling, DNA repair, and cell cycle progression.

Giant barocaloric effects over a wide temperature range in superionic conductor AgI

Barocaloric materials offer promise in solid-state cooling devices, but few materials have been show to display giant barocaloric effects near room temperature. Here, the authors demonstrate that solid electrolyte AgI displays giant inverse barocaloric effects near its superionic phase transition at ~420 K.

Giant solid-state barocaloric effect in the Ni–Mn–In magnetic shape-memory alloy

Solid-state materials showing giant caloric effects near room temperature could provide an alternative to cooling devices based on gas cycles. Strong emphasis has so far been dedicated to caloric effects induced by a magnetic field. It is now demonstrated that a small pressure applied to the compound Ni—Mn–In gives rise to a giant caloric response.
