Peroxisomal metabolism of branched fatty acids regulates energy homeostasis

A UCP1-independent mechanism of thermogenesis involving ATP-consuming metabolism of monomethyl branched-chain fatty acids in peroxisomes is described and a previously unrecognized role for peroxisomes in adipose tissue thermogenesis is identified.

pHmScarlet is a pH-sensitive red fluorescent protein to monitor exocytosis docking and fusion steps

A number of pH-sensitive fluorescent proteins exist which enable monitoring of some but not all steps of exocytosis. Here the authors engineer a bright, photostable red pH-sensitive fluorescent protein, pHmScarlet, to allow visualisation of the docking and fusion events of exocytosis.

An antiferromagnetic diode effect in even-layered MnBi₂Te₄

The peroxisomal β-oxidation enzyme ACOX1 increases in liver with obesity, but the physiological significance is unclear. Lipopolysaccharide binding protein resists hepatic oxidative stress by regulating lipid droplet homeostasis

Oxidative stress triggers lipid accumulation in cells by sequestering triglycerides in lipid droplets. Here, the authors show that lipopolysaccharide-binding protein interacts with redox sensor PRDX4 to control lipid-redox balance and promotes triglyceride accumulation in droplets by capturing unsaturated lipids.
