  • Developing low-Pt or Pt-free electrocatalysts is critical for lowering the cost of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, the authors report a low-cost and high performance tandem catalyst, with Ru nanoclusters decorated with Pt single atoms, for the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction.

  • An interfacially coupled Cu-cluster/GaN photocathode is designed to overcome the efficiency and stability bottlenecks in photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction to multicarbon products. The self-optimized Ga–N–O interface facilitates and stabilizes interfacially oxidized copper species of copper clusters, which function as efficient C–C coupling sites for ethylene production.

  • The synthesis of well-defined heterostructure interfaces can be leveraged to design advanced catalysts. Now a catalyst consisting of carbon-supported Janus particles with crystalline Ru and amorphous CrOx sides is shown to achieve high performance for both alkaline hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions due to the synergy between both sides.

  • Overcoming the sluggish kinetics of hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline media is of critical importance for anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Here the authors report atomically dispersed chromium coordinated with hydroxyl clusters on ruthenium nanoparticles for accelerated hydrogen oxidation reaction.
