Synthetic circuits for cell ratio control

A synthetic genetic circuit made up of recombinase-based cell-fate branching devices enables precise control over the ratios of cell types in an offspring population derived from one founder strain, and could be used to build user-defined multicellular aggregates.

Bio-orthogonal functionalization of bacterial cellulose combining metabolic glycoengineering and click chemistry

Bacterial cellulose (BC) possesses excellent biocompatibility and mechanical strength but lacks the bioactivity needed for many biomedical applications. Here the authors use glycoengineering–click chemistry to incorporate azide groups into BC in situ, and show enhanced BC-mediated wound healing.

Revising the hygroscopicity of inorganic sea salt particles

Sea spray, one of the largest natural aerosol sources, plays an important role in the Earth’s radiative budget. Here the authors show that the ability of sea salt particles to take up water is smaller than for pure salt, with implications for the parameterization of the direct aerosol radiative effect.

The receptor binding domain of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants targets Siglec-9 to decrease its immunogenicity by preventing macrophage phagocytosis

Zhang and colleagues found that Omicron RBD binding to Siglec-9 impaired phagocytosis and antigen presentation in macrophages, an effect abrogated by an F375S mutation in the spike protein of Omicron.

Interactions between atomically dispersed copper and phosphorous species are key for the hydrochlorination of acetylene

Copper-based catalysts are widely investigated for the industrially important hydrochlorination of acetylene (PVC production), whereby phosphorus-doped carbon supports have been found to improve the catalyst’s properties. Here the interaction between the P-C bond and atomically dispersed Cu²⁺ species is clarified and the reaction path of C₂H₂ and HCl revealed.
