  • Two-dimensional poly(arylene vinylene) frameworks are promising polymer semiconductors, yet obtaining highly crystalline materials is a major challenge. Now a series of 11 highly crystalline or single-crystalline 2D poly(arylene vinylene)s have been prepared—from 2D imine-linked covalent organic frameworks through a Mannich-elimination strategy—with diverse lattices, enhanced conjugation and specific surface areas up to 2,000 m2 g−1.

  • High-resolution imaging of organic 2D materials using transmission electron microscopes is challenging. Here, the authors find the optimal electron acceleration voltage, and demonstrate 1.9 Å resolution, enabling detection of interstitial defects and functional groups in 2D polymer thin films.

  • Arbitrary phase control within a single photon wave packet is demonstrated and verified by two-photon quantum interference measurements. Combined with the previously demonstrated ability to control a single photon's amplitude, frequency and polarization, the phase shaping presented here allows for the complete control of single-photon wave packets.

  • David Hassel et al. show that mutations affecting the protein nexilin underlie an unusual type of dilated cardiomyopathy characterized by disrupted Z-disk structures in cardiac muscle. Functional studies in zebrafish revealed that nexilin has an essential role in maintaining Z-disk stability and suggested that the disease-causing nexilin mutations found in humans encode proteins that act in a dominant-negative fashion.

  • Radiotherapy can induce fibrosis in cancer patients, limiting its use in clinical settings. Here, the authors identify a differentially methylated enhancer of the lipid kinase DGKA in fibroblasts from breast cancer patients developing fibrosis after radiotherapy and they show that DGKA inhibition affects lipid homeostasis and reduces pro-fibrotic fibroblast activation.

  • Christoph Plass, Christopher Oakes and colleagues study genome-wide DNA methylation dynamics during B cell maturation and the pathogenic role of transcription factor dysregulation in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). By comparing normal and malignant B cells, they find that tumors derive from a continuum of maturation states, which correlate with different clinical outcomes.
